A½ Mr and Mrs Othello were elated. They just received news that they had inherited a house in the Delli Culta district, one of the prime locations in Lahore. Less welcome was the news that Mr Othello's father had died, and they had to conduct the proper funeral rites for him. In addition, they had to handle all the details concerning his demise before they could inherit the house. This was revealed by the lawyer in charge of the late Mr Othello's will. An observer would not be wrong in surmising that the son was not close to his father.

The young Othello was the only son of the late Othello. He had a fierce row with his father when he wanted to marry his present wife, Dean, a pretty Australian and settle down with her in her homeland. The result was that his father had withdrawn all financial support and severed all ties with him. It was therefore a surprise for Alvin, the younger Othello, when he received news of the surprise windfall. "The old man must have forgiven me," he thought to himself gleefully. Because he was not doing well in Australia, this was an opportune time to settle in Lahore.

B½ In 1274, Italian explorers Marco and Niccolo Polo set out on a 24 year journey in which they traveled the famous Silk Road from Italy, through brutal deserts and towering mountains to eastern China. They traveled over 4,000 miles in all. Marco and Niccolo were among the very first Europeans to explore the fabled empire of China. In China, Marco Polo even worked for ruler Kublai Khan. Polo detailed his experiences and findings in China by writing a book. Polo described materials and inventions never before seen in Europe. Paper money, a printing press, porcelain, gunpowder and coal were among the products he wrote about. He also described the vast wealth of Kublai Khan, as well as the geography of northern and southern China. European rulers were very interested in the products Polo described. However, trading for them along the Silk Road was dangerous, expensive and impractical. European rulers began to wonder if there was a sea route to the east to get the products they wanted at a reasonable price.

5.निम्नलिखित गद्यांशों का अंग्रेजी में अनुवाद कीजिए :

क) वीरवर अमरसिंह मारवाड़ के राठौड़ राजा गजसिंह के ज्येष्ठ पुत्र थे। इनके समय में राजस्थान के प्रायः सभी राजपूत नरेश प्रतापी मुगल सम्राट शाहजहाँ के अधीन हो चुके थे। नियमानुसार प्रत्येक

राजपूत नरेश को स्वयं अथवा अपने पुत्र को शाही दरबार में उपस्थित रखना पड़ता था। वहाँ वे अपनी वीरता और पराक्रम के बल पर उन्नति करते थे।

अमरसिंह राठौड़ भी शाहजहाँ के दरबार में किसी उच्च पद पर नियुक्त थे; किंतु इस कारण के अतिरिक्त दूसरा मुख्य कारण और भी था। अमरसिंह के बचपन से ही तेजस्वी और उदंड होने के कारण मारवाड़ के सभी सामंत सरदार अमरसिंह से रुष्ट रहने लगे, यहाँ तक कि उनके पिता गजसिंह भी उनसे अप्रसन्न रहते थे। मारवाड़ नरेश के ज्येष्ठ पुत्र होने के कारण अमरसिंह राज्य-सिंहासन के वास्तविक उत्तराधिकारी थे, किंतु गजसिंह ने उनका राज्याधिकार से च्युत कर अपने छोटे पुत्र यशवंतसिंह को युवराज बना दिया था। मारवाड़ सिंहासन से कुछ संबंध न रहने के कारण अमरसिंह शाही दरबार में ही रहा करते थे। दरबार में उन्होंने अच्छी ख्याति प्राप्त की थी और बादशाह ने भी प्रसन्न होकर 'तीन हजारी' का मनसब और 'राव' की उपाधि देकर नागौर का इलाका उनके अधीन कर दिया था।

पैतृक राज्याधिकार से वंचित किए जाने पर भी अमरसिंह ने अपने बाहुबल से यह सम्मान प्राप्त किया था; किंतु जिस उदंड स्वभाव के कारण उनको स्वदेश और युवराज पद तक से वंचित रहना पड़ा, उसने यहाँ भी उनका पीछा न छोड़ा, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप उन्हें अकाल में ही इस संसार को छोड़ना पड़ा।

ख)  दो गोल से पिछड़ने के बावजूद शनिवार को भारतीय हॉकी टीम ने न्यूजीलैंड को 3-2 से हराकर राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों के फाइनल में प्रवेश किया। रविवार को फाइनल में भारत का मुकाबला मौजूदा चैम्पियन ऑस्ट्रेलिया से होगा, जो 2010 राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों फाइनल की पुनरावृत्ति होगी। एक अन्य सेमीफाइनल में ऑस्ट्रेलिया ने इंग्लैंड को 4-1 से हराया।

नियमित कप्तान सरकार सिंह के बिना खेल रहे भारत के लिए कार्यवाहक कप्तान रुपिन्दर पाल सिंह, रमनदीप सिंह और आकाशदीप सिंह ने गोल दाग कर टीम के लिए कम से कम रजत पदक पक्का कर दिया। किवी टीम ने दूसरे मिनट में साइमन चाइल्ड के गोल की बदौलत 1-0 की बढ़त हासिल कर ली थी। दसवें मिनट में कीवी टीम को पेनाल्टी कॉर्नर मिला, लेकिन वह इसे गोल में तब्दील नहीं कर सके। हालाँकि 18वें मिनट में मिले पेनाल्टी कॉर्नर में न्यूजीलैंड ने कोई गलती नहीं की और निक हेग ने गेंद गोल पोस्ट में डाल कीवी टीम को 2-0 की बढ़त दिला दी। 27वें मिनट में भारत को एकमात्र पेनाल्टी कॉर्नर मिला और ड्रेग फ्लिकर वी. रघुनाथ ने गेंद को नेट में डाला, रुपिन्दर ने गोल कर भारत को पहली सफलता दिलाई।
